Team three

Finally our team is blessed with another resident. "You are very resourceful now!", says Tahir (our year one resident). "What does that mean?", I say all confused."You have a lot of manpower now!", he finishes. I agree. Finally our team is blessed with another resident. In medicine there are four teams. Each team has a Consultant, a senior resident, one or two residents and one or two interns. All three teams had six members while my team was short of a resident. And it so happened that the shortest team had to deal with the largest number of patients. Half a month passed like this. Coming in the mornings, half-heartedly attending the morning sessions, rushing towards the wards and writing in follow ups. Chasing the labs, checking in on the medications. Things have been going crazy so far...... Here is my team... Fozia Well, she is my sister. Cant say much about her. Samad Our intern from Hyderabad. He has straight long (well,

"Where is he bleeding from, gums, nose, per rectally????" We have a young male with viral fever. His platelets have started to drop. He has an older sister, who wears green nailpolish, which looks oh so pretty on her. As there is a risk of bleeding hence I warn the sister, "If your brother has bleeding from any site, you have to inform us.". I repeat this about thrice. She nods her head in affirmative. Rounds start. Rounds finish. The girl in green seems to be waiting for me at the counter. As I approach her, she goes on, "Doctor you told me that if my brother bleeds I have to inform you". Oh great, my mind races. The poor guy has started to bleed, and we will have to transfuse platelets. Not nice. Not nice at all. "Where is he bleeding from, gums, nose, per rectally????", I ask. "Oh no doctor, not from there", she answers. "Then where?", I say, starting to panic now."You see doctor, when the nurse took out the c

"What are you doing with the cell phone?" This elderly gentleman with a dozen co-morbids lies on his bed. His file says he is pretty sick. Currenly in special care unit, he looks stable otherwise. I greet him and ask him how he is doing. "I'm doing fine doctor!", comes in the enthusiastic reply. I notice the cell phone in his hand, his continuous staring at it and curiousty tickles me. "What are you doing with the cell phone?", I couldn't help but ask. "Oh,  I m playing snakes! One needs to be busy all the time, right!", he smiles away. I am impressed, really impressed. "But this will finish the charge of your cell?!", I ask. He points to the charger on his bedside and continuous scrawling on the cell. Snakes it is!

Busy bee

It seems like ages since I wrote my last post. The last few days have been busy, really busy. My world twisted 360 degrees on first July. Post call, in fact very post call, I headed to C2 ward to start off with the sixteen patients that the previous team had left as a gift for me.     The saga begins…… It was a mess, a whole mess.I did not know the patients and the patients did not know me! Then there was the team. Myself, the (so called) senior resident, my sister , the year one resident (post call) and our two brand new interns (and one of them post call!).   Dr Saliha is our consultant. A very pleasant lady. The first day, she bears with us and together we try to sort out what the sixteen of them have. As we complete rounds its two hours spent. Then come in the round orders. My senses are almost going numb. The rest of the team looks tired as well. The first day finishes at six pm. Yes we can! Then comes in the on call day. The day we are supposed to admit new patients
