Meethi Pardesi Eid

Image
Eid Mubarak guys! Hope you had a fantastic one. Will take you through what I did. Chand Raat I tried to have things exactly the way back home. This involved cleaning home squeaky clean. I had bought henna cone a while back from Ramadan market. So it was application time.... My attempt at mehndi Each year my Bhabhi applies mehndi on me. I am not much of a mehndi artist but I gave it a shot nonetheless. My Bhabhi sent me pictures of my niece's hands with mehndi. Please say awwww and also MashaAllah. Awwwwww I made saiwaiyaan and chicken karahi (recipe was from food fusion). I mainly made it for the mini-Eid party with colleagues that us three muslim girls at work had planned for Thursday (second day of EID). Saiwaiyaan Chicken Karahi Eid Itself  It rained and rained in the morning and pretty much the whole day of Eid. I made it a point to join the Eid prayers as otherwise it would be too gloomy sitting at home all alone. The nearest mosque is an hour a...

Ramadan Nights at Lakemba

Image
Its the weekend and me and my friends plan to visit Lakemba, a Muslim suburb in Sydney. Every weekend in Ramadan, the street is closed for vehicles and streets are filled with food stalls. There were few people when we arrived, but as the night passed the streets turned busy with people tasting food, smiling away.   The thing that you are supposed to do here is come with an empty stomach. We however did not do that. My friend from Indonesia and I had a grand iftar at home before leaving. On the whole I hardly ate there. I share pictures of mostly sweet food that I did not try . I did taste the sweet lady fingers  and the fried oreos (both pictured below). Both were yum. Fried Oreos Lady fingers?!   There is a place called 'Khushboo' which is said to serve the best haleem and biryani. Our full state did not give permission so I made a mental note to come back to Lakemba post Ramadan and try it. Another must try thing are the camel burgers. They ha...

A random day of travel

Image
The weather is slowly moving towards winter. I have a flight to Singapore. After getting my luggage checked, the security guy stops me and asks me to show him my passport. He goes through it and asks me in Sindhi where I am heading and then asks what I do. I tell him I am a doctor. He asks me since when. Since forever I think to myself. Today I am not telling anyone my age. Go figure! Next stop is the airport masjid. So many ladies are heading for Umrah. There is always a leader who they would seek for advice on exactly how many rakats to pray. I ask the lady to pray for me . She asks me if I am also going for umrah. I smile back. Its a no. Just a random pizza pic

Kyun Nikala- review

Image
Kyun Nikala is a stage show by KopyKats productions. We watched it on Saturday at a 5 pm show at Arts counsil. I sort of knew that it would be a political satire but did not know that it would be this good. Some of the jokes however flew above my head (sar kay upar say guzar gay) but I saw my father laughing hard so I suppose that they must be relevant and funny. Kindly note that I have very limited political knowledge. The last scene was the best, which was a laughing riot.  All the actors were fantastic, but the best were Sajid Hassan, in the role of a Chaudary and Mohsin Ejaz as Mujeeb Bengali. There are very few shows left. Do watch it guys.

Load wedding - movie review

Image
First day. Second show. Us four siblings decided to go watch this movie at five, leaving one crying child behind and one tagging along with us. As the title suggests, the movie was about a wedding(s). The acting was pretty impressive by all the actors. The special stars were Mehwish Hayat and the character 'Baby Baji'. Mehwish Hayat made you believe that she was the character involved and made the sensitive me tear a few times. Baby Baji was funny and realistically played. I enjoyed all the songs except the mehndi song. It was way too long and could have easily been cut. The sets were made with detail, with tiny mirrors at the washbasins, Tibet powder, narrow streets and beautiful fields. The dressing of the cast was as required. Nothing over the top. On the whole I enjoyed the movie. It has bits and pieces of laughable jokes, roaring emotions, catchy songs, a believable love story and a lesson at the end. Its Eid. There is a lot of burning patriotism in the air. Its a...

Good bye Ramadan

Image
Ramadan comes to a close. A month which was tough but absolutely wonderful. Here is a brief look at what I absolutely loved this Ramadan. Iftars: Iftar meant mango juice. Absolutely divine. We made pakoras only twice. Both the times I was the cook. My solute to all the women who made them throughout the month. Only they can understand how you turn into a pakora yourself by the time that a plate is made. I did not have a single iftar outside home. I had one last year and figured that this stuff is not for me. This time for me means eating small amount, having lazy chai and spending time with family. The act of giving Karachiites give like no other. I loved watching all the videos of how Karachi shared sehris and iftaris on the roads. Loved the iftari trays that the neighbours sent. Tried sending them back as much as possible. To those who did not get a return tray, better luck next time. And thank you for this year. Suno chanda I started following this dr...
